In 2009, after being laid off, Farnoosh Torabi became an entrepreneur out of necessity, and it was the best thing that happened to her. She had been thinking about taking the leap for years, but succumbed to the golden handcuffs — all the pretty perks that come along with a full-time journalism job. Still, even while in her 9-to-5, Farnoosh was consistently building her own brand by leveraging her position and, most importantly, building her runway for when she’d leave her company by setting aside a year’s worth of living expenses. That strategy paid off, and today, nearly 10 years later, she is host of the award-winning So Money podcast, author of the bestselling book, When She Makes More, and a frequent speaker on women and money.

On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Farnoosh talks about the importance of side gigging and building your own brand, why you must build your runway before you take flight, smart ways to leverage your opportunities, the important lessons she has learned as an entrepreneur and how financial independence adds a layer of courage for women.

On this episode, you’ll learn:

  • When you need to exercise your “no.”
  • How to build your brand while working your job.
  • Why you need to build your own runway before you take flight.
  • The power of financial independence for women.
  • Why she decided to launch her “So Money” podcast and how it has grown her business.
  • Why she wishes she had been kinder to herself in the early days of her business.
