Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival Co-Founder Stephanie Rance on Swinging at the Curve Balls

Growing up in Queens, New York, Stephanie Rance always questioned why things were believed to be “this way” instead of “that way,” and why she couldn’t create something different. Later, throughout her career in the music industry and later in film, that curiosity propelled her into situations where she was comfortable jumping in feet first with more questions than answers. As an entrepreneur, this serves her, but there were moments throughout her journey, when all didn’t go as planned.

On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Stephanie — who is the co-founder of the now-16-year-old Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival — talks about jumping in feet first (for better or worse), how to overcome massive disappointments, and why the universe throws you curve balls.

On this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The value of having the courage to leap.
  • How connections take you the long way.
  • How she created an annual event that’s 16 years strong.
  • What you need to have in place to get sponsors for your event.
  • How to recognize when your side hustle should become your full-time focus.
