Tola Okogwu, publisher and author of the children’s book series, Daddy Do My Hair hails from Nigeria and Southeast London, and grew up thinking she was supposed to get a “traditional job” — doctor, lawyer, etc. After university, Tola did what she was expected and entered the workforce, ready to embark on her “traditional” journey. That is until the moment when she was standing at the top of a staircase and thinking about throwing herself down the steps to avoid going to her job. At that point, she knew she had to make a change.
On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Tola shares how she and her husband made sacrifices that allowed them both to do work they love, and how her love of writing led her to her purpose: creating children’s books that feature diverse characters and storylines.
On this episode we discuss:
- How to create space for new opportunities.
- The value of mirrors and windows.
- Importance of representation.
- The self publishing process.
