This journey of being an entrepreneur has been both the most freeing and at times the most infuriating. Let’s get real: nothing in this life is perfect, I don’t care how well-filtered the image we portray to the outside world. And for me, when I decided to jump in with both feet and become a “full-time” entrepreneur — leaving my six-figure-a-year salary and my fancy job title behind — it was quite imperfect. Everyone in my circle, including me, was terrified of what might happen; but I had faith that I would somehow figure it out. I was determined to figure it out.
And you know what? I still haven’t! This is an absolute work in progress. And I have found that this is true for many of the women entrepreneurs I speak to: we have a vision for our businesses, and for our lives, and we’re doing our best to keep moving forward and figure this out along the way as best we know how.
Women-owned businesses are the fastest growing segment in the United States, particularly businesses owned by women of color. As women, we are creators, filled with ideas and contributions that we want to offer to the world, and a desire to be abundantly compensated for our gifts. But where do we, as women, turn when things don’t exactly go as planned, when we have needs in our businesses — whether that’s information, resources, talent, investors or technology? Where can we get real about what’s really going on? How do we connect with other likeminded women entrepreneurs who may have similar businesses, similar experiences, similar stories, or a bit of much-needed inspiration to share when challenges arise? Because, as you well know, challenges will arise, life will keep “life-ing” and there will be moments when you may want to give up.
These are the moments when what you need most is… support.
I have had my share of hangups around asking for, and accepting, support, but having a mind shift around what support means to me — and deciding to view it as sexy! — has created space for a little magic and a lot of grace to show up in my business and in my life. There are low moments, still, but there are people I now have in my community who help me reach higher. They challenge me, push me, encourage me, support me, and share the truths of their own journeys to let me know I’m not alone!
And that’s the kind of magic that I want to create for you with the Support is Sexy podcast. I’m big on doing research to better my business: constantly reading books, reviewing studies, watching videos and listening to a long list of podcasts daily. But I’ve found that, of the top business podcasts, few are by women, and very few, if any, are more than one day a week. And rarely have I heard a business podcast for women, hosted by a woman, where the guests — who are women entrepreneurs — are interviewed about their life stories and how it shaped their businesses, where they open up and candidly share the highs and lows of their own entrepreneurial journeys, when things were imperfect — and sometimes a hot mess! — but they still persevered.
That’s what the Support is Sexy podcast is all about: women supporting women by boldly sharing our stories, where we struggled, how we survived and ultimately how we thrive!
