Entrepreneurship is in Monique Greenwood‘s blood. Her grandfather owned one of Washington, D.C.’s first successful black-owned businesses — Greenwood Moving and Transfer company — that was birthed as a result of his innovation when racial segregation threatened his grocery business. After hearing about the story of her grandfather, and later about her aunt who took over the business, Monique knew that ownership and building a family business was going to be a part of her destiny. Now, as the owner of her very own empire — Akwaaba Inns, which includes four extraordinary bed and breakfast locations along the East Coast — Monique also wants her businesses to be a part of her family legacy.
This Tuesday, November 21st on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), we get to see how Monique, her family and her teams operate these bustling inns and cater to a wide variety of guests, from couples, to celebrities to girlfriend trying to get away, on her new docu-series, Checked Inn. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Monique, who was a longtime journalist, former Essence magazine editor-in-chief and one of the coolest bosses I’ve ever had, shares the importance of having your own, how to build a successful business (or be an intrapreneur), how to have a both-and possibility and why creating generational wealth is more important than ever.
On this episode, you’ll learn:
- How to know when a step back is worth the risk.
- The importance of being an intrapreneur in your day job.
- The moment you have to make a decision between the dream job or dream business.
- The importance of creating generational wealth.
