While on bed rest 15 years ago, Tressa Azarel Smallwood — who at the time was a teacher — established Life-Changing Books, her own publishing company that has gone on to release more than 100 titles and become one of the most respected independent trade publishers among store chains, vendors, authors and readers. LCB offers a variety of African-American literature including contemporary fiction, women’s fiction, urban literature and erotica.
Tressa has spent the last few years working as creative lead on her newest venture — MegaMind Media — and developing her upcoming feature films, scripted and non-scripted television shows. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Tressa — who has consulted more than 2000 authors — she shares the ins and outs of self-publishing, common mistakes most authors make, and how to go after your business idea even when nobody believes in it.
