Amira Rahim on Getting Over the “Starving Artist” Myth and Closing the Gap Between Your Talent and Your Taste

Amira Rahim considers herself an accidental entrepreneur. As a visual artist, she didn’t think about selling her work at first, but shared it often on social media. All of that changed when she decided to “make the ask” for a sale, received enthusiastic response and began to sell her work.

Now, as a working artist, the Newark, New Jersey, native continues to evolve her business to include her artwork, licensing, commissioned pieces, workshops and more. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Amira talks about getting over the “starving artist” myth, learning to market yourself as a creative and holding your art sacred; but not precious.

On this episode you’ll learn:

  • You have to ask for the sale and create a way for people to pay you.
  • Be unafraid to tear apart your work and start again.
  • Why art is sacred; but it’s not precious.
  • Why it takes time to close the gap between your capabilities and your taste level.
  • Get over the idea that it has to be hard for it to be beautiful.
  • Why it’s not necessarily best to be FIRST.
  • How to create other offerings for your audience.
  • Her top marketing tools as an artist.
  • Forget  the “starving artist” myth.
  • Why you never really know what your legacy will be.
