Calibe Thompson has been in love with entrepreneurship since birth, inspired by her entrepreneurial father and creating her own business by selling candy while growing up on the island of Jamaica. As Calibe grew older, even while in professional positions and during her stint as a background singer for top reggae artists, she always knew she was meant to create something for herself. Eventually, and after overcoming many obstacles and navigating many detours, Calibe has found her passion as a producer of media and events that celebrate Caribbean culture — including the television show, Taste the Islands, her Island Origins magazine and her food festival, Taste the Islands.
On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Calibe — who is Executive Producer, Blondie Ras Productions and Creative Director of Island Syndicate — shares the sometimes winding road to discovering your passion, doing the work even when you don’t know the “how,” and being prepared when the opportunity comes knocking.
On this episode we discuss:
- The power of empathy.
- Why you have to say YES before you’re ready.
- The importance of asking for support from your community.
- Keep doing the work even when it seems impossible and you don’t know “the how.”
- Why you MUST follow up.
- The process of pitching your show to PBS.
- Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.
- How to delegate and build your team.
